Statement of the KPFA 50th Anniversary Committee 4/6/99

The following statement was read on the 4/6/99 KPFA news,  followed by an interview with committee member Alice Hamburg, who knew station founder Lewis Hill and was one of the original listener sponsors.  Other members of the 12 person committee include former KPFA General Manager David Salniker, John
Harrington, a founder of Working Assets, labor lawyer Victor Honig, Hannah Krantzberg, Tomas Moran, long-time programmer Robbie Osman, LaVarn Williams, and station events producer,  Bob Baldock.

The statement:

KPFA 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE
 1929 MLK Jr. Way
 Berkeley California 94705

 MEMORANDUM

 April 6, 1999

To: Lavarn William, Amina Hassan, KPFA Staff Liaisons, Bob Baldock, Chris
Dann, Lynn Chadwick, Executive Director and the Board of Directors of the
 Pacifica Foundation

From: The KPFA 50th Anniversary Committee

The KPFA 50th Anniversary Committee has decided unanimously to temporarily
suspend all its activities in view of the on-gong crisis within Pacifica,
triggered by, but not limited to, the precipitous termination of General
 Manager Nicole Sawaya

To have provoked predictable turmoil within the KPFA community on the eve of
launching the 50th Anniversary Capitol Campaign, has made it impossible for
us to carry on. This action can only have a concomitant ripple effect within
the larger Pacifica community, and alienate our base of support

We urge the Board to recognize this crisis as an opportunity to examine what
is driving the discontent, and to open a system wide dialogue about
Pacifica's mission and the policies and practices which would support it.
That dialogue must include all concerned parities.
