For those who may not know, Al Huebner was the long time host of a show called "The Health Department" on KPFK. It mainly dealt with information on alternative health care and new health research. He presented among, other things, material from obscure, scientific journals, for example of the benefits of Vitamin E. Al Huebner was taken off the air for violating the gag rule. I will let him speak in his own words in his letter to the LA Weekly, March 31, 1995: Dear Editor: In saying that I took myself off the air, acting general manager Pam Burton is correct only in the sense that I knowingly commented on developments at the station in the face of a gag order imposed on programmers at "Free Speech Radio" Station KPFK. During more than 21 years of broadcasting at the station, I had often responsibly commented on policy, fundraising efforts and programming. Some previous members of management encouraged those comments, some bristled at them, but none invoked a gag order. More important, my 4 minute commentary on February 10 went to the matters of deceptions by the station's new management---- it was chiefly, but not exclusively, listeners who were deceived--- and of authoritarian rule by KPFK's absentee owner, the Pacifica Foundation. There has still been no response to these comments. As long as the new management can keep critics away from listeners, I think it's content to hope that the outrage will blow over and to base the station's future on "anti-Newtism." The tactic may work in keeping KPFK alive, but at what price to the concepts of free speech and progressive politics that the station purports to serve?-----Al Huebner
