Setting A New Standard For Censorship: The Dan Coughlin Firing
______________________________

On October 27, 1999, 16 of Pacifica's affiliate stations, who pay for and air Pacifica national programming, conducted a one-day boycott in order to highlight their displeasure at the actions of Pacifica's management. This is not the first action or expression of concern from community radio stations around the country. Various forms of protest against censorship and anti-democratic practices have been occurring since 1996.

Dan Coughlin, Director of the Pacifica's nationally distributed newscast PNN, included a brief report on the boycott action by the 16 affiliates. For this, he was removed from his position. This action has provoked widespread condemnation from various quarters, as well as the now routine spin-doctoring and arrogance from the Pacifica management and their adherents. Below is a compilation of material, in chronological order, about the situation, as it has been developing. Many thanks to the crew of the savepacifica website from whence much of this material was drawn. -- ED
