Thursday morning report: On the 8 a.m. KPFA news Chris Bruney reported that Lynn Chadwick had directed Program Director Andrea Kissack to give verbal warnings to six programmers, Flashpoints host Dennis Bernstein and Associate Producer C.S. Song and Morning Show host Philip Maldari for breaking the network rule not to discuss station business on the air. Bruney then played the tape of Flashpoints Associate Producer Leslie Kean reading the statement agreed to by the paid and unpaid staff that she read on Flashpoints the previous day, which, of course, may be considered another violation by Chadwick.
Bruney announced that Larry Bensky has said that he will not meet with Chadwick and not only will not recognize the gag rule, he will devote this weekend's Sunday Salon program to discussing Chadwick's actions.
Shortly afterward, on the second hour of the Morning Show, Philip once again read the forbidden statement, presumably setting himself up for a written warning from Pacifica corporate headquarters.
Chadwick can and should be reached by phone at 510-848-6767 ext. 202, by fax at 510-845-0289 and by e-mail at ynnchad@aol.com.
Board chair Mary Frances Berry can and should be reached by phone at
202-337-0382, by fax at 202-276-7588 and by e-mail at
mfberry@sas.upenn.edu.
People should also be mobilizing for a major
demonstration in front of the station and Chadwick's headquarters at
1929 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (94704) on KPFA's 50th birthday, April
15 at noon that has been called by KPFA staff.
