WHERAS:
KPFA, a Berkeley institution, celebrates 50 years commercial-free broadcasting
on April 15, 1999; and
WHERAS:
KPFA is dedicated to promoting peace and justice locally and globally;
and
WHERAS:
KPFA encourages and supports cultural diversity: and
WHERAS:
KPFA champions freedom of the press giving coverage to political points
of view that mainstream media outlets ignore; and
WHERAS:
KPFA is dedicated to maintaining independent funding; and
WHERAS:
KPFA has over the past half century built a public communication center
to disseminate diversity of thought and art; and
WHERAS:
KPFA has helped make it possible for individuals of artistic and intellectual
ability to contribute to our culture.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the Council of the City of Berkeley proclaims April 15 as KPFA Day
in honor of KPFA's 50th anniversary and in honor of it being the first
listener-sponsored radio, and the genesis for community radio and the Pacifica
network;
BE IT RESOVED,
that the Berkeley City Council supports the mission of KPFA and urges KPFA
to remain true to its mission by promoting grassroots democracy, peace
and justice in its own ranks as well as in the greater community.
