FAIR sees Pacifica as a national treasure in an impoverished media
landscape. We understand the strong feelings involved in the current
dispute at KPFA, and we believe that the current polarization -- if
it
is allowed to worsen -- risks long-term and potentially permanent damage
to Pacifica as a national institution.
Accordingly, we urge Pacifica's national management and board to
immediately seek outside mediation of the dispute by a mutually
acceptable group, and to rescind the dismissals of Nicole Sawaya and
Larry Bensky. We believe that such actions by Pacifica management would
signal good faith and would lead to reciprocal actions by KPFA
staff
and programmers. We believe the wrong direction would be for management
to take further disciplinary action against KPFA staffers.
We know that members of Pacifica's national board and management have
given years of dedicated service to Pacifica, and how deeply you care
about Pacifica's future. FAIR's leadership has worked with Pacifica
for
many years, some of us for decades.
Feel free to call on us about this dispute.
