REPORT ON KPFK PICKET - MAY 10, 1999

On May 10, 1999 a picket was held outside KPFK to protest censorship and the "gag rule" which is being used to keep the community in the KPFK community in the dark about what is going on at Pacifica. Several programs were censored by KPFK management to prevent LA area people from finding out about the rebellion in Berkeley, and the issues underlying it.

Here is a report on the picket from one of the demonstrators, John Sommers:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of 4:30pm, there are 12 people picketing KPFK, signs and one full head Clinton mask.

Marc Cooper (KPFK programmer now serving as management mouthpiece)  Kathy Lo and Stacey Fancher came out at the beginning.  Marc told the demonstrators that HE represented the KPFK Staff and that they all supported the dirty laundry rule.  He also admonished the demonstrators that there is a war in Kosovo and they should care about that instead of the question of Pacifica.

The following has been posted in the KPFK Phone Room

TO OUR FUND DRIVE VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS:

A small group is making allegations against KPFK and urging people not to support the station.  THEY DON'T REPRESENT THE STAFF OR PROGRAMMERS OF KPFK IN ANY WAY, NOR DO THEY REPRESENT THE PEOPLE AT OUR SISTER STATION IN
BERKELEY.

Some of their concerns are about important issues at Pacifica, but much of their message is inflammatory, inaccurate and destructive.

Almost five years ago, key organizers of ths group vowed "to take Pacifica down" when they and/or friends were let go from KPFK.  Since then, they've been making wildly exaggerated and distorted charges.  The latest controversy is about a dispute at KPFA, a
situation outside of KPFK's control.

WHILE WE SUPPORT OUR COLLEAGUES IN BERKELEY, THERE'S A STRONG CONSENSUS AMONG THE KPFK STAFF THAT BRINGING THEIR CONFLICT TO OUR AIR IS COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.  Instead, we honor a policy -- established decades
ago -- that prohibits programmers from using KPFK airtime to discuss internal disputes.  KPFK'S MISSION IS TO SERVE OUR LISTENERS WITH PROGRAMMING, NOT TO REQUIRE THEM TO DECIPHER AND MEDIATE PACIFICA'S FREQUENT AND
COMPLICATED INTERNAL CONFLICTS.

Some want to label this as corporate censorship or a "gag rule" but this charge is unfair.  We believe we are acting from our core values.  We are not following some outside dictate, but doing what we believe is in the best interest of KPFK and our service to
listeners.

If you have questions or thoughts, we are happy to talk about this.  WE ONLY ASK THAT YOU HELP US FOCUS ON THE HARD WORK OF THIS FUND DRIVE AND THAT WE HAVE THESE DISCUSSIONS OUTSIDE THE PHONE ROOM.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT.
